Feathers in the Cap for Menzies in South Africa

e-Bulletin from Forsyth Black - SVP Africa

At the 2011 end of year Feather Award ceremonies held by the Airports Company South Africa, Menzies once again stole the show.

For the second year running Menzies won the Best Airside Service Provider award at our biggest station in Africa, Johannesburg OR Tambo International. Exceptionally well done to Cherif Fall for pulling that award off despite a lengthy period of strikes where at one point more than 730 staff were not at work. Cherif and his team performed miracles with the bare minimum of resources and the maximum of effort and application - hardly a single flight delayed. Within 10 days of ending the strike, the OR Tambo team flew through their initial ISAGO audit with flying colours and a result to be very proud of.

Cape Town won Best Airside Service Provider for the first time, reflecting the leaps and bounds that Cecil Mankantshu’s Station has made in the past year. We look forward to successful first ISAGO audit there in January.

And it was business as usual at Claude van Vuuren’s clutch of Coastal Stations as they held their great track record with Best Airside Service Provider awards in both Port Elizabeth and East London.

Thanks must also go to Ian van Rooyen and the rest of his Operations management team who are true stars and for whom challenge and adversity is food and drink. Behind the scenes there are yet more great people working very hard and who are also not forgotten.

And a special thanks in 2011 goes to the Menzies “First Airborne” group of staff who flew in from across the world at short notice to assist their South African colleagues during our strike period. They made us proud and these awards are theirs also.
